The Story

This 19th century artwork was executed in enamel on porcelain by noted KPM artist Wagner. It is a beautiful German miniature portrait of the biblical character Rachel, the favorite of Jacob’s two wives, painted and signed by Wagner.

Though the back of the porcelain plate has not been unmated, the artist’s signature is delicately hidden in the soft curls of Rachel’s hair. The portrait is mounted against faded fabric and is surrounded by a lovely gilt spelter cast metal frame.

This German piece is from around the 1860s and was produced for KPM (Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, aka the Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin). The site measures 1 3/4" x 1 1/2", while the frame is 5 1/8" x 4 3/4" x 2 1/4".
