The Story

Circa 103-76 BC, this ancient “widow’s mite” coin is known for its biblical connotations, as it was a form of currency used during Jesus’s time. The bronze coin is elegantly set in a simple bezel that follows the shape of the coin. One side of the coin features an 8-rayed star; the other features an anchor that was struck off center, a common trait of many ancient coins. The irregular shape of the coin is beautiful in its organic nature. Ancient coins such as these varied in shape, and the nature of the coin’s strikings were dictated by the shape of each unique coin.

The widow’s mite is historically significant and a symbol of sacrifice and generosity. It is referred to in Mark 12:41-44 and Luke 21:1-4. In the story, Jesus witnesses a poor widow donating two coins, worth only a few cents. He says to his disciples “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.” Historians have come to understand that the widow’s mite (also known as lepton) would have been the low denomination coin Jesus was referring to. The ancient coin is both a fascinating piece of history and a powerful symbol of faith.

The pendant measures 9/16” x 3/4”, plus an additional 4 x 5.5 mm teardrop-shaped bail. It weighs 2.05 grams. Marked on the bezel as 14k gold.
