The Story

This is a gorgeous 14K gold Victorian hair brooch. Orderly panels of tightly woven black human hair sit beneath a domed window of carved crystal. The pieces is surrounded by a row of 45 seed pearls, which is surrounded by a row of 30 faceted jet stones. This is a beautiful piece of Victorian hair jewelry in excellent condition. Hair Jewelry either mourning or for remembrance was popular in the mid 1800s. Photography was not readily available, portraits were expensive; so these treasures were made so one could carry a small part of a loved one with them. This brooch measures 1 3/8" x 1 1/4". It is in excellent condition and the clasp still works perfectly. This piece dates to around 1860; the gold is not marked but acid tests to 14K.
