Wooden Snuffbox With Hand Painted Image of Monk in Graveyard

This curious wooden snuffbox is circa 1850, hand painted with an image of a monk encountering a gentlemen in a graveyard. The box is painted with an ink wash and has delicate link work. Circular in shape, it is intricately carved—lathe turned with beautiful lines and levels. The lid is tight fitting, and the interior of the box is stained with a deep maroon. 

The box measures 2 3/4” in diameter and is 1/2” thick.
